7 Co-Parenting Tips For a Successful School Year

Over the years, I have seen firsthand how co-parents can work together to support their children's health and well-being. That’s why, as a new school year begins, I want to share a handful of co-parenting tips with you–ones I've collected from dedicated clients and friends who have found them extremely helpful for their families.

Hopefully, they’ll offer you and your loved one’s valuable guidance as well.

7 Co-Parenting Tips for a Successful School Year

  1. Establish a consistent routine: One of the most effective ways to ensure your child's security during the school year is to maintain a routine. This includes set times for homework, meals, bedtime, screen time, and extracurricular activities. Plus, predictability can make transitions between homes much smoother.

  1. Present a unified front on schoolwork: Make sure you and your co-parent are on the same page when it comes to schoolwork. Know when assignments are due, what projects are underway, and how you can assist. Utilize tools like co-parenting apps and shared calendars, and consider a weekly check-in call, text, or email focused solely on school matters.

  1. Attend parent-teacher meetings together: When possible, attend parent-teacher meetings and school events together. It shows your child that you're both committed to their education and allows you both to stay informed about their progress.

  1. Set clear communication about extracurricular activities: Make decisions together about your child's extracurricular activities. Consider the time and financial commitments these involve and ensure they're manageable for both households.

  1. Engage in respectful handoffs: Make the transition between homes as stress-free as possible. A simple "Have fun at mom/dad's!" can go a long way in reassuring your child that it's okay to enjoy time with both parents.

  1. Share emergency contacts and information: You and your co-parent should have all necessary medical information, emergency contacts, and access to school portals. This way, both of you can act if there's a need.

  1. Encourage honesty: As always, allow your child to express their feelings about the co-parenting arrangement. Regularly ask how they're doing and be open to making adjustments that better meet their needs.

One more note: The most effective co-parenting strategies are the ones that work for your family's needs and circumstances. No co-parenting situation is alike, so please modify these tips as you see fit.
